Kenner Products, commonly known as Kenner, was founded in 1946 in Cincinnati, Ohio, by brothers Albert, Philip and Joseph L. Steiner. Its name came from the street near the original offices, north of Cincinnati Union Terminal. The company began using television advertising nationwide in 1958 and introduced the Kenner Gooney Bird mascot and the slogan “It’s Kenner! It’s fun!” in 1962. General Mills acquired Kenner in 1967. In 1971, Rainbow Crafts was merged into Kenner, adding Play-Doh to its line. General Mills spun off Kenner and Parker Brothers in 1985 as Kenner Parker Toys, Inc.; Tonka acquired that business in 1987 and Kenner became a division. Hasbro acquired Tonka, including Kenner, in 1991. Kenner became known for action figures, licensed character toys, construction sets, drawing toys, collectibles and die-cast models. Hasbro closed Kenner’s Cincinnati offices and merged its product lines in 2000. The Kenner brand returned in 2010 through Star Wars: The Vintage Collection.
