Lehman Brothers began in Montgomery, Alabama, where Henry Lehman opened the H. Lehman dry-goods store in 1844. After brothers Emanuel and Mayer joined, the business became Lehman Brothers in 1850. The firm accepted cotton as payment, developed a cotton-trading operation, and opened a New York branch at 119 Liberty Street in 1858. It formed Lehman, Durr & Co. with John Durr in 1862 and later helped found the New York Cotton Exchange in 1870. Lehman joined the New York Stock Exchange in 1887 and underwrote its first public offering in 1899. It merged with Kuhn, Loeb & Co. in 1977, was acquired by Shearson/American Express in 1984, and was spun off by American Express as Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc. in 1994. Lehman filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on September 15, 2008. Barclays acquired major North American investment-banking and trading operations, while Nomura acquired franchises in Asia-Pacific and parts of Europe and the Middle East.
