Its story began in Osaka in 1928 and grew through the Minolta-35, SR-2, XD-11, and the Maxxum 7000 autofocus system. Minolta began in Osaka, Japan, in 1928, when Kazuo Tashima established Nichi-Doku Shashinki Shōten, a Japanese-German camera shop. Its first product, the Nifcarette bellows camera, arrived in March 1929. The Minolta name was adopted for cameras in 1931, while the business operated as Chiyoda Kōgaku Seikō from 1937 to 1962 before taking the Minolta name. Milestones included the Minolta-35 rangefinder in 1947, the SR-2 SLR in 1958, and the Maxxum 7000 autofocus SLR system in 1985. Minolta cooperated with Leitz from 1972, producing the Leica CL and contributing designs related to Leica R cameras. In 2003, Minolta merged with Konica to form Konica Minolta. The combined company ended camera and photo operations in 2006, transferring DSLR camera assets to Sony. Sony introduced the Konica Minolta-based Alpha A100 that year and retained the Minolta A-mount while later moving from DSLR to SLT cameras.
