Initially available for Windows, it gained an official Macintosh client after Napster acquired Black Hole Media's Macster in December 1999. Its centralized index, accessible interface, and hard-to-find recordings made it a defining name in early online music culture. Copyright litigation followed, including actions by record companies, Metallica, and Dr. Dre. A court injunction led Napster to shut down its network in July 2001, and it filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in June 2002. Roxio bought the brand and logos for $5.3 million in November 2002, then launched a revamped subscription and download service in October 2003. Best Buy acquired Napster in 2008, sold it to Rhapsody in 2011, and Rhapsody adopted the Napster name in 2016. Later owners included MelodyVR, Hivemind and Algorand, and Infinite Reality, which acquired it in March 2025. In January 2026, the streaming service was shut down and relaunched as an artificial intelligence tool.
