Northern Pacific Railway, reporting mark NP, was an American transcontinental railroad operating from 1864 to 1970 across the northern tier of the West, linking Minnesota with the Pacific Northwest. Congress chartered the company on July 2, 1864, to connect the Great Lakes and Puget Sound. Construction began at Carlton, Minnesota, on February 15, 1870. The route reached Fargo in 1872, and the final ceremonial spike was driven by former president Ulysses S. Grant near Gold Creek in Montana Territory on September 8, 1883. Its system served Idaho, Minnesota, Montana, North Dakota, Oregon, Washington, Wisconsin, and an international branch toward Winnipeg. Headquarters moved from Brainerd to Saint Paul, Minnesota. The railroad carried farm products, cattle, timber, minerals, consumer goods, and passengers; its flagship train was the North Coast Limited. After financial reorganizations and decades of operation, Northern Pacific merged in 1970 to form Burlington Northern Railroad. Burlington Northern later merged with the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway in 1996, becoming BNSF Railway.
