Northern Pacific Railway, reporting mark NP, was an American transcontinental railroad operating from Minnesota to the Pacific Northwest from 1864 to 1970. Congress chartered the company on July 2, 1864, to connect the Great Lakes with Puget Sound. Groundbreaking followed at Carlton, Minnesota, on February 15, 1870. The line reached Fargo in 1872 and the upper Missouri River in 1873, while Tacoma was selected as its western terminus that year. After financial crises and reorganizations, construction resumed, and Ulysses S. Grant drove the ceremonial final spike in western Montana Territory on September 8, 1883. Headquartered first in Brainerd and later Saint Paul, Minnesota, NP served Idaho, Minnesota, Montana, North Dakota, Oregon, Washington, and Wisconsin. Its North Coast Limited was the flagship passenger train. Northern Pacific merged with other lines in 1970 to form Burlington Northern Railroad. Burlington Northern later merged with the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway in 1996, creating BNSF Railway.
