Set down a drink beside a classic chapter of American aviation. This Northwest Orient Airlines Ceramic Coaster draws on the airline’s famed 1947 to 1986 identity, an era rooted in direct U.S.-Japan service and growing Pacific connections. Northwest’s longer story began in 1926 with mail flights and expanded through Minneapolis, Detroit, Seattle, and global hubs. It makes a thoughtful accent for a home bar, office, coffee table, or collection built around airline history.

Northwest Airlines began on September 1, 1926, as Northwest Airways, founded by Colonel Lewis Brittin and originally based in Detroit, Michigan. Its early work centered on U.S. Post Office mail service, including a Minneapolis-Chicago route; passenger service began in 1927, followed by service to Winnipeg in 1928. After being selected for the Northern Transcontinental Route to Seattle in 1933, the company adopted the Northwest Airlines name in 1934 and incorporated in Minnesota. Postwar Pacific operations became central to its identity. On July 15, 1947, Northwest inaugurated direct U.S.-Japan service via Alaska, and it branded as Northwest Orient Airlines from 1947 to 1986. In 1986, Northwest merged with Minneapolis-St. Paul-based Republic Airlines, adding hubs in Detroit, Memphis, and Minneapolis-St. Paul. A 1993 alliance with KLM linked Northwest with Amsterdam Schiphol. Northwest merged with Delta Air Lines in 2008; Delta completed reservation-system integration and ended use of the Northwest name for flights on January 31, 2010.

Ceramic coaster engraved with a simple, vintage-style wordmark that brings a quiet, archival charm to a coffee table or office desk. The cool ceramic top takes heat and condensation with calm confidence while the cork backing keeps cups steady and surfaces safe. It sits easily beside a well-loved mug during long work sessions or late-night reading, a small, steady surface that feels both practical and quietly nostalgic.
