Northwest Airlines began on September 1, 1926, as Northwest Airways, founded by Colonel Lewis Brittin and originally based in Detroit, Michigan. Renamed Northwest Airlines in 1934, it developed its Northern Transcontinental Route to Seattle and later built a major trans-Pacific presence. Direct U.S.-Japan service began July 15, 1947, via its Great Circle route, and the airline branded itself Northwest Orient Airlines from 1947 to 1986. Northwest merged with Minneapolis-St. Paul-based Republic Airlines on October 1, 1986, adding hubs at Detroit, Memphis, and Minneapolis-St. Paul. A 1993 alliance with KLM linked Northwest with Amsterdam Schiphol. Northwest and Delta Air Lines announced their merger in 2008; Delta retained its name and branding, and Northwest flights stopped using the Northwest name on January 31, 2010.
