Jackson & Curtis was founded in July 1879 on Congress Street in Boston, Massachusetts, by Charles Cabot Jackson and Laurence Curtis. The investment banking and stock brokerage firm began with two employees and leased premises on Congress Street in May 1881. It belonged to the Boston Stock Exchange and acquired a seat on the New York Stock Exchange in 1890. In June 1942, after the difficult years of the Great Depression, Jackson & Curtis merged with the Boston brokerage firm Paine & Webber. The combined business, Paine, Webber, Jackson & Curtis, had 22 branch offices and became a significant participant in the New England financial market. Its headquarters moved from Boston to New York in 1963. PaineWebber Inc. was incorporated as the holding company in 1970 and went public on the New York Stock Exchange in 1974. The company added Mitchell Hutchins in 1977 and Blyth, Eastman Dillon & Co. in 1979. In 1984, its divisions were consolidated under Paine Webber Inc.; the business then operated under the Paine Webber brand. UBS AG acquired Paine Webber in 2000.
