GhostCorp Apparel - resurrecting iconic corporate ghosts.
Add a touch of regional retail nostalgia to your next round with The Wiz golf balls. This design honors the electronics-store chain launched in New York City in 1977 and its famous Nobody Beats The Wiz name. For years, its advertising and local team sponsorships made the brand part of the New York sports landscape. A memorable choice for golfers, collectors, and fans of classic Northeast business history.
The Wiz was an electronics-store chain founded in New York City in 1977 by Stephen Jemal, who included brothers Lawrence, Marvin, and Douglas Jemal in the business. Operating primarily across New York, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey, the chain later adopted its familiar advertising slogan as its official name, Nobody Beats The Wiz. During the early and middle 1990s, it became a prominent sponsor of New York-area teams including the Yankees, Knicks, Mets, Nets, Rangers, Devils, and Islanders, while also sponsoring the Orioles, Flyers, Whalers, and Canadiens. Following a rapid expansion from about 20 locations to more than 80 in under a year, the company filed for bankruptcy in 1998 and Cablevision bought it for $80 million. At its peak, the retailer had 94 stores, 2,000 employees, and $1.4 billion in revenue across five states, plus music-only stores in Maryland and the Washington, D.C. area. Cablevision later dropped the slogan, and the chain closed permanently in 2003. Marvin Jemal subsequently opened The Zone in several former Wiz sites; P.C. Richard acquired Wiz assets, chiefly its name, in September 2003.
