Theranos Inc. was an American privately held health technology company founded in 2003 by Elizabeth Holmes after she left Stanford University. The business was originally called Real-Time Cures before Holmes renamed it Theranos, combining the words therapy and diagnosis. Based in California, it promoted blood testing using small samples collected by finger prick, a vessel called the nanotainer, and an analysis device called the Edison. Theranos moved to 1601 S. California Ave. in Palo Alto in June 2012 and later operated from Page Mill Road, with laboratories in Newark, California, and Scottsdale, Arizona. Partnerships included Safeway in 2012 and Walgreens in 2013, but both relationships ended after questions about the technology and testing practices. Regulatory actions, lawsuits, and investigations followed. Theranos ceased operations in September 2018 after failing to find a buyer. Its patents were transferred to Fortress Investment Group in exchange for cash assets to be distributed to creditors.
