Theranos Inc. was an American privately held health technology company founded in 2003 by 19-year-old Stanford University undergraduate Elizabeth Holmes. Originally called Real-Time Cures, it was renamed Theranos, a blend of “therapy” and “diagnosis.” The company pursued lab-on-a-chip blood-testing technology intended to make testing cheaper and more accessible through small blood samples. Theranos moved to 1601 S. California Ave. in Palo Alto in 2012 and later operated from 1701 Page Mill Road, with laboratories in Newark, California, and Scottsdale, Arizona. It partnered with Walgreens in 2013 and Safeway invested in planned in-store clinics; both relationships ended by 2016 and 2015, respectively. Its devices included the Edison analyzer and nanotainer collection vessel. After regulatory actions, lawsuits, and scrutiny of its testing claims, Theranos ended laboratory operations in 2017. It announced its shutdown on September 4, 2018, and transferred its patents to Fortress Investment Group on September 12, 2018.
