Ultra Games was built for a unique moment in game publishing. Created in 1988 for North American releases, the label helped expand a yearly catalog while licensing limits were still in force. After those limits relaxed, Ultra ended in 1992, leaving behind a memorable name for collectors and fans of the cartridge era. Ultra Software Corporation was a shell corporation and publishing label created in 1988 as a subsidiary of Konami of America. It was formed for the North American market during an era when a console maker's licensing rules limited a third-party publisher to five NES releases per year. Konami had been releasing more than ten games annually for the Famicom and its disk add-on in Japan, so the Ultra Games label expanded its North American annual library to ten releases. Ultra's first NES title was Metal Gear, released in June 1988. The label initially localized existing software from Japan, then also published work from other companies. Its catalog included console, handheld, IBM PC, and Commodore 64 releases. Following the 1991 North American launch of the Super NES, the annual publishing restriction was relaxed. Ultra consequently lost its purpose, and Konami dropped the label in 1992. Its final releases were Ultra Golf and World Circuit Series, both issued in March 1992. A related European subsidiary, Palcom Software Limited, continued until early 1994.
