The Virginian Railway, reporting mark VGN, was a Class I railroad created to move high-quality smokeless bituminous coal from southern West Virginia to Hampton Roads, Virginia. Civil engineer and coal manager William Nelson Page partnered with financier Henry Huttleston Rogers to develop the route. Their first venture, the 85-mile Deepwater Railway, was formed in West Virginia in 1898; the Tidewater Railway followed in Virginia in 1904. The two lines were combined as the Virginian Railway Company on March 8, 1907, with Page as its first president. Completed in 1909, the line ran from the West Virginia coalfields to a new coal pier at Sewell's Point near Norfolk. Its 436-mile main line linked places including Mullens, Princeton, Roanoke, Victoria, Suffolk, and Norfolk. Known as the “Richest Little Railroad in the World,” VGN operated steam, electric, and diesel power. It merged into Norfolk & Western Railway in 1959; major portions of its former route remain in use under Norfolk Southern Railway.
