The Wabash Railroad kids tee brings a classic rail story to the next generation of train fans. WAB grew from early railroad predecessors into a system known across the Midwest and Great Lakes region, with routes to cities such as Chicago, Detroit, St. Louis, Kansas City, and Toledo. Great for school days, family train watching, museum visits, and model railroad events, it celebrates curiosity about the people and routes that moved a region.
The Wabash Railroad, reporting mark WAB, was a Class I railroad serving Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, Michigan, Missouri, and Ontario. Its name came from the Wabash River. The system grew through a long series of consolidations beginning with early predecessor lines, including the Northern Cross Railroad, the first railroad built in Illinois. The Toledo, Wabash and Western Railway, formed in 1865, was renamed Wabash Railway in 1877. Reorganizations created the Wabash, St. Louis and Pacific Railway in 1879 and the Wabash Railroad in 1889. Major connections included Chicago, Kansas City, Detroit, Buffalo, St. Louis, and Toledo, while its direct Kansas City-Detroit route was a key freight advantage. After foreclosure in 1915, the company was reorganized as the Wabash Railway. A new Wabash Railroad was organized in 1941. Norfolk and Western leased the line in 1964; the company remained in existence on paper until its formal merger in 1991. Its corporate legacy ultimately became part of Norfolk Southern.
