White Star Line was a British shipping line whose first Liverpool company was founded by John Pilkington and Henry Wilson in 1845. It initially served the UK-Australia trade, later acquiring its first steamship in 1863, before financial failure led to bankruptcy in 1867. On 18 January 1868, Thomas Ismay bought the house flag, trade name and goodwill and established headquarters at Albion House, Liverpool. With financing tied to Gustav Christian Schwabe and shipbuilding by Harland and Wolff, the reorganized line developed North Atlantic services between Liverpool and New York. Its Oceanic-class ships entered service from 1871, followed by notable liners including Britannic, Germanic, Teutonic, Majestic, Cymric and Oceanic. White Star emphasized comfortable travel for upper-class and steerage passengers alongside cargo operations. It merged with rival Cunard Line in 1934 as Cunard-White Star Line; Cunard bought White Star's share in 1950. Modern Cunard ships retain the term White Star Service.
