Zune was Microsoft’s discontinued brand of digital media products and services, marketed from November 2006 until June 2012. It began with portable media players developed in cooperation with Toshiba, following Microsoft’s MSN Music service, which had launched in 2004 using PlaysForSure DRM. Microsoft announced MSN Music’s closure in 2006 before introducing Zune without PlaysForSure support. The first U.S. model, the 30 GB Zune 30, arrived on November 14, 2006. Later hardware included flash and hard-drive players, with the Zune 4, 8 and 80 introduced in 2007, the Zune 16 and 120 in 2008, and the touchscreen Zune HD in 2009; a 64 GB Zune HD followed in April 2010. The brand also encompassed Zune Marketplace, Zune Pass, Windows desktop software, and music and video services on Xbox 360 and Microsoft phones. Microsoft ended Zune hardware in October 2011. In 2012, its digital content brands transitioned to Xbox Music and Xbox Video, while Zune Marketplace services were replaced on October 16, 2012.
